~ Hi there! On HGTV's Hit Reality TV Show DESIGN STAR, I sewed, painted & sawed my way through some pretty tough challenges, but design doesn't have to be hard! I believe in combining simple, timeless design ingredients to create what I call "Design Recipes". I hope you find this to be a truly awesome resource. www.design-recipes.com contains design tips, articles, podcasts, how-to videos and of course design recipes galore! I invented Design Recipes simply because I love sharing my ideas! For years I collected design magazines, tagged and clipped pages with inspirational images & did nothing! That's because I didn't have the resource information so I could purchase the beautiful furniture I was seeing on the pages of the magazines! With Design Recipes, I SHARE how the room was executed, giving you the basic design tools needed for you to recreate the same look on your own and best of all I give you all of the resource information! Enjoy!
I wanted to take this opportunity to make sure you all know exactlywhere to find me and my expert home staging tips online and in the social media world.

The countdown has begun! There is a little more than a month left until what is truly one of the most exciting home staging events of the SUMMER. The prestigious 3-Day Certified Staging Professionals course will be heading to NASSAU COUNTY, LONG ISLAND — with the 3-day course held in Westbury, Long Island –-JULY 20-22, 2013
Nassau County is a wonderful area located on New York’s Long Island. It is also one of the most active real estate markets country with close proximity to New York City and the world famous Hamptons.
If you are looking to become a Certified Home Stager by the best program in the business — this is the class you have been waiting for!
Here it was upon me! My daughter’s birthday. After attending several parties for her friends, she made it clear she wanted one of her own. If you have been to a children’s birthday party (any child between 2 and 6) you know keeping them “engaged” is key! I settled upon a “Paint Your Own Pottery” party at a glorious art space called Fiber Flame located in Saugerties, New York (www.fiberflamestudio.com). It is a trek for those from New York City but truly a haven in the Hudson Valley, home to many city “weekenders”.
Looking for design inspiration and party ideas? Here are some of the party ideas that helped make the good times roll!
“Adult Snacks” (Cathy Hobbs Design Recipes)
When throwing a children’s party “adult snacks” are key. These colorful goodies came straight from SAM’S CLUB. I simply re-plated them on white china from IKEA.
The “spread” (Cathy Hobbs Design Recipes)
I chose to plate/bowl all of the food in color bowls, using turquoise appetizer plates as rests for serving utensils. Powder blue buckets were used to store knives and forks for guests.
Instead of just going with white or solids, try mixing in stripes. Also don’t be afraid to mix and match bold colors!
Simple Lanterns = Easy, Fun Decor (Cathy Hobbs Design Recipes)
Similar to having a outdoor event such as a wedding, don’t try to compete with your existing decor. Here, I chose white and lime green lanterns to complement the floor tiles. Each lantern was hung with a coordinating chocolate brown ribbon, to match the cabinets in the room.
One of the party favors was jelly beans. I specifically wanted solid colors as opposed to an assortment. I quickly found the only way to achieve this was to go the “gourmet” route. Thank you Jelly Belly!
I wrapped ordinary shipping boxes in fabric to make the table look festive and create tiers for the various favors!
Bank Pennies for the piggy banks made by the kids! (Cathy Hobbs Design Recipes)
Works of Art!
The Cake!
Let’s face it toddlers like fun cake, so I went with Dora and Diego. But wait! My child is allergic to food coloring!! Hence the white border around the Dora and Diego scene LOL!
Custom made chocolate bar wrappers! (Cathy Hobbs Design Recipes)
Just to make sure all the kids would have their sugar fix, custom wrapped Hershey bars rounded out the party favors!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

Cathy’s party ideas have been featured in magazines such as Grace Ormonde Wedding Style, Wedding Bells, Martha Stewart and on CW 11 Morning News in New York City and HGTV Design Star.
love the idea of a pottery or art party for your child? you can find fiber flame studio of saugerties at http://www.fiberflamestudio.com.

Starting and building a home staging business is ideal for design enthusiasts, professional organizers, do-it-yourselfers, real estate insiders, and virtually anyone who has a desire to have their own business and has an interest in real estate, interior design, or decorating.
PREMIERE HOME STAGING CERTIFICATION COURSE–CERTIFIED STAGING PROFESSIONALS (CSP)
In 2005, when I became interested in adding home staging services to my existing interior design business, there was really only one course that stood out above the rest: the three-day Home Staging Certification Course offered by Certified Staging Professionals.
Similar three-day courses and online courses are currently being marketed, but the Certified Staging Professional Course (CSP) is the only course I discovered that provides home staging training plus the in-depth business knowledge that a new home stager needs to succeed in the competitive world of home staging. Their three-day intensive course consists of two days of in-class instruction, followed by a third day on-site where students actually stage a property.

Earning Money as a Home Stager
Home stagers can charge anywhere from $75 to $300 an hour, so for an avid marketer as well as someone with lots of contacts, the income potential can be tremendous. Just like with any other entrepreneurial endeavor, what one gets out of it is linked to what one puts into it.
The first step in launching a home staging business is letting everyone you possibly know that you are a home stager and are available to help them sell their properties. Most people at some point in their lives will need to sell a property and that is where you will come in!
What is wonderful about starting a home staging business is that there are minimal startup costs. In order to start a home staging business, one will need to have the following:
1. A computer
2. Business checking account
3. Professional liability insurance
4. A digital camera
5. A professional email address
6. A website
7. Business cards
8. A dedicated business phone line
9. A fax machine
What Does Home Staging Entail?
Staging can mean a number of things as it relates to selling a property. It can mean anything from painting and minor repairs to obtaining rental furniture and furniture arrangement. As a stager you will want to build a team to help you execute these tasks.
As a stager, you can expect to provide the following services:
1. Remove clutter
2. Pack away any and all unnecessary items and furnishings
3. Apply a fresh coat of paint or make paint color recommendations
4. Clean and steam carpets
5. Hire a professional cleaning crew
6. Recommend minor repairs
7. Rent furniture
8. Incorporate furniture and accessories to show function
Are Courses Required?
Unlike interior design, there are no education requirements for becoming a home stager. In fact, home staging is actually an unregulated industry. The question I would simply ask someone who is considering starting a home staging business is why would you not seek training?
It is hard enough starting an entrepreneurial venture, let alone setting out on one’s own without the necessary tools and basic foundation. Taking a professional business course such as the Home Staging Certification Course offered through Certified Staging Professionals is the key to having the foundation and resources in order to set you on the proper path.
The Certified Staging Professionals website as well as their expert staff and instructors provide a wealth of resources and knowledge as well as ongoing support to help make your home staging business successful.

Cathy Hobbs is a LEED AP with a residential and commercial interior design firm that specializes in sustainable design. Hobbs said she always encourages her clients to “seek green and sustainable solutions for their interiors” that are “highly functional and aesthetically beautiful.”
Hobbs has recently completed a 75-unit condominium building (see slideshow) in Harlem in which she did all of the common areas, the gym, lobby, children’s playroom as well as the model residence.
“Our commitment is to functional interiors that are not only visually stimulating and successful but are real livable creative solutions,” Hobbs said. “Our designs are approachable and innovative.”
Hobbs believes interior designing will continue to push towards a green industry with designs that make sense for the consumer and the environment.
“Clients are looking not only for a solid value but for design solutions that enhance their lives and those around them,” Hobbs said.
Hobbs is also a five-time Emmy winning television host for METRO Residential which airs on Sunday at 11 a.m. on PIX 11. Hobbs also specializes in real estate staging which has done well even in the down economy, she says.
As the mother of a little girl and a lover of bubble baths, when I was contacted by a writer from Ehow.com who was writing a piece on …yes.. rubber duckie (specifically) decor. I said why not!!!
Here are some of my top tips for enjoying these adorable bathtub friends:
Rubber duckies add a whimsical, fun element to bathtime.
Decorating with rubber duckies is one of the standards of children’s bathroom design schemes, says HGTV Design Star finalist and celebrity interior designer Cathy Hobbs — though undoubtedly this lighthearted, kitschy theme is a winner for all ages. You don’t have to rely on expensive sets from a bed-and-bath store that everybody and their neighbor already have. Rather, piece together a brand-new loo that makes a statement, with ideas that are crafty, clever and cost-effective.
Pint-Sized Pleasers
Removable, oversized vinyl duck stickers are a design favorite for Hobbs when styling a tyke’s rubber duckie bathroom. Decorative stickers can make for a fun, interactive experience, especially on the tile walls of a bathtub or shower. Hobbs amplifies the fun for her littlest clients with giant rubber duckie toys big enough for a child to fit inside and use as a bathtub, plus plenty of hand-sized rubber duckie bath toys.
Splash of Color
One of the easiest ways to transform and style your bathroom is with a wash of color in yellow, blue or green. Hobbs accents her duckie-decor themes with a coat of bright, colorful paint, then adds a border of hand-painted duckies for a whimsical touch. If you don’t feel comfortable enough to draw rubber duckies freehand, Hobbs recommends using stencils.
Web-Footed Accessories
When Los Angeles real-estate specialist and home stager Chantay Bridges creates a duckie-themed bath, she reaches for rubber duckies and a glue gun to add flair to accessories she already has on hand. A pair of duckies nestled side by side can be refashioned into a soap dish. Add style to a plain wicker basket by rolling a set of plush towels, securing them with decorative ribbon and affixing a duckie on the bow with hot glue.
Affordable Artwork
D.G. Bahtuoh, author of the duck-themed children’s book “Nap-Nap, Quack-Quack,” suggests purchasing a book with a rubber duckie illustrations you can cut out to use for artwork. Mounted in low-cost frames found at your local discount store, storybook art can shave big bucks off similar items sold at home decor stores, and nobody will ever know the difference.
Creative Ceiling
If you have an artistic flair, try your hand at unusual crafty touches to put an unforgettable “topping” on your masterpiece. Florida kitchen designer Ed Phillips recalls an unusual rubber duckie decor element he saw on a design school tour he took of Disney’s Celebration, Florida, property: “In one of the bathrooms, they had papier-mache bottoms of ducks on the ceiling, and the rest of the ceiling was faux-painted to look like water, giving the effect you were in the water looking up at the ducks.”
